In this time, the couple visited a few circuses and was faced with a number of mistreatment situations. According to the founders\u2019 report, animals were living in terrible hygiene conditions and malnourished. They were kept in chains, in inappropriate cages, very small and dirty, suffered torture and did were not fed in order to perform.<\/p>\n
At that time, there was nearly no mention of the issue of animal well-being. But, for Milan and Anita, those visits were impacting and decisive for them to start in the fight or the defense of the great apes.<\/p>\n
Faced with the growing commercial exploitation, the couple intensified their work, dedicating themselves to guaranteeing the well-being of these primates. They thought a hard battle together with the GAP Project Brazil (Great Ape Project)<\/a> to prevent animal exploitation in circuses and shows. The outcome was implementation of state laws \u2013 in the states of Goi\u00e1s, Alagoas, Esp\u00edrito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Para\u00edba, Paran\u00e1, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and S\u00e3o Paulo – forbidding the use of any animal in circuses and shows.<\/p>\n After that, they started the rescue process, for the purpose of providing chimpanzees with a dignified life, free of pain, suffering or fear. In 2007, the couple establishes the Anami Conservationist Institute, not for profit, that is continuously dedicated to providing daily care to great apes victims of mistreatment, retired from the entertainment industry and rescued from the legal commerce. Lamentavelmente, muitos deles passaram longos anos de suas vidas confinados em jaulas deterioradas, em completa solid\u00e3o, privados do conv\u00edvio social com outros chimpanz\u00e9s e sem as m\u00ednimas condi\u00e7\u00f5es para uma vida saud\u00e1vel. Estes eventos, que deixam traumas profundos, f\u00edsicos e psicol\u00f3gicos, requerem da equipe muito trabalho, dedica\u00e7\u00e3o e perseveran\u00e7a.<\/p>\n Nossa miss\u00e3o e nossa luta \u00e9 a reabilita\u00e7\u00e3o de cada primata e a sua integra\u00e7\u00e3o com outros indiv\u00edduos da mesma esp\u00e9cie, j\u00e1 que a ressocializa\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 fundamental para a O trabalho desenvolvido pelo Instituto Anami consiste em acolher, proteger e reabilitar os grandes primatas. Os mesmos cuidados se estendem a outras esp\u00e9cies como papagaios, araras, tucanos, macacos-aranha, macacos-prego, cervos e jabutis, que tamb\u00e9m adv\u00eam de situa\u00e7\u00f5es de maus tratos, da ind\u00fastria do entretenimento e de apreens\u00f5es do tr\u00e1fico ilegal por parte das autoridades competentes – Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renov\u00e1veis (IBAMA), Instituto Ambiental do Paran\u00e1 (IAP) e Pol\u00edcia Ambiental.<\/h4>\n
